Kayla Stillings Block 1 March 7, 2012 Those pass Sundays In the verse Those Winter Sundays by Robert Hayden the poet reveals his feelings about his father. In this meter he uses some poetic devices. Three poetic devices that he use be imagery, personification, and word pickax. Imagery is visually descriptive or rhetorical language. The startle face of imagery in the verse is the archetypical and atomic number 42 line. It says Sundays too my father got up early on and institutionalize his habit on in the blueblack icy which makes me mental image a man getting ready to start his day in the nipping. Another example of imagery in the poem is in the first stanza. It says then with cracked hands that ached which makes me take to speculative hands that are rough and dry. Personification is the ascription of a personal nature or human characteristics to something nonhuman. The first example of personification in the poem is in the second stanza. It says Id wake and hear the cold splintering, breaking. The cold finisht splinter and it cant break.
The poet gave the cold a personal nature which made it personification. Word picking is a term used to describe the words chosen by an author, using words that are very particular and descriptive of exactly what you want to say. An example of word choice in this poem is in the first stanza. It says and puzzle his clothes on in the blueblack cold. Blueblack isnt exactly a word. The poet put it together to help describe how cold it was. In destruction the poet does an hard-hitting job of using these three poetic devices. It was balmy to gamble them, and the poem was eas! ily understood. If you want to get a abundant essay, order it on our website: BestEssayCheap.com
